PUZZLES
These puzzles are courtesy of a junior/earliteen teacher named John
Coneff from Caldwell SDA church in Idaho. He began creating them to
help to focus his students, giving them a little visiting time at
the beginning of Sabbath School as long as it was about the puzzle,
as well as helping them review what they had studied through the
past week.
In his own words: "As we started doing this on a regular basis, the
students noted (okay, they complained...) that the crosswords were
too hard. I agreed, and then called each student each week to
provide one question for the crossword. The "notations" stopped, and
each student knew at least one answer to the crossword. Sometimes
they didn't remember their question, but they knew they had
contributed.
"To add consistency to the process, we began to use one word from
each of the following: the title, the PowerPoint, the Power Text.
Sometimes we utilized FTWTF (find the word that fits), from the
PowerPoint and Power Text. This allowed use of longer words without
making the students feel foolish because they didn't know how to
spell the long words. Of course this also meant they were scouring
the PowerPoint and Power Text to find the necessary word, again
reinforcing these themes. To add interest, we sometimes made
questions from the specific activities from the previous week (we
are blessed with regular attendees).
If you would like to make your own puzzles:
-
Crosswords were created using "Crossword
Construction Kit 98", available from
http://www.wintools.com/order/order.htm
for $19.95. The program is not very intuitive, however, it is quite
powerful.
-
eFax messenger. After creating crosswords and adding the graphics
(BMP is the only format supported), I print the documents to eFax
because it has annotation functionality.
-
JamCam II
software, comes with a PDF printer driver. After adding the
PowerPoint, Power Text & FTWTF information, I print to the file to
PDF format. Although Crossword Construction Kit has the ability to
add text, I've found it doesn't always wrap the characters as
expected.
-
For graphics, I use dgl.microsoft.com, insert
the graphic into MS Word, copy from there into MS Paint or Corel
PhotoHouse and save as a bitmap. I also use
www.google.com's image search (with
mature content screening set to on) to find graphics.
